Jihei Murase was born in 1957 in Tokyo. He studied sculpture at Tokyo Zokei University, and became a third generation woodworker and lacquer craftsman.
Murase performs every stage of production himself, from turning the wooden bases to applying the natural urushi lacquer to his work. He inherited his grandfather's close association to the Japanese tea ceremony and researched tea ceremony utensils. He also received instruction in the Way of Tea from Suzuki Sokan of Hibi-an, a master of the Urasenke School of Tea. Murase's training and exposure to a long-standing family tradition has helped him to produce unique Negoro style works.
